Toddle provides a comprehensive grading setup that gives schools the flexibility to define how student performance is evaluated and reported.
Note: How grading is configured depends on your school's setup. In a course-based setup, grading is configured at the course level and applies to all classes linked to that course. In a subject-based setup, grading is configured per subject and grade level.
In this article, we will cover the following:
Setting up
Grading periods
Grading methodology
Grade scales
Final grade
GPA and credits
Score-based grading
Standard-based grading
Other settings

Setting up Grading periods

Setting up grading periods is the first step towards configuring the grading system for your school. Grading periods are usually aligned to the school’s reporting cycles, such as terms or semesters, which are used to track and report students’ progress. Once a term/semester ends, you can lock the grading periods associated with it to keep student scores accurate and prevent changes from unnoticed edits or added assignments.
To set them up, go to Admin portal > Account setup > Grading periods
Read for a step-by-step guide on how to set up grading periods on Toddle.

Setting up Grading methodology

To set up grading methodology for your school, go to Admin portal > School > Grading setup > Grading methodology
Here, you can choose one or both grading methodologies for each course/subject and grade level in your school:
Score/letter-based grading: Scores and grades are calculated by aggregating students’ results from individual tasks, typically using methods such as totals or averages.
Standards-based grading: Grades are derived based on students’ performance against defined learning standards and reflect their level of mastery.
To begin, click on ‘Edit’ at the top right of the page.

Next, select the grading methodology and map it to the individual courses.
Once done, click Save changes at the top.
Note: You can assign one or both grading methods to a course or subject based on your school's assessment approach.

Setting up Grade scales

Grade scales are essential for defining how student performance is assessed across courses/subjects, assignments, and standards.
To set up grade scales for your school, go to Admin portal > School > Grading setup > Grade scales.
As an administrator, you can create and manage various types of grade scales, including:
Regular grade scale: Used for assigning a numeric or letter grade to students for courses/subjects, assignments, or standards. This is the most commonly used scale.
Special grade scale: Used alongside a regular grade scale to assign special grading codes - such as ‘Incomplete’, or ‘Absent’ - that do not fit into standard academic performance categories but are necessary for reporting.
Dependent grade scale: Used to convert the values of a regular grade scale into a different scale - commonly used for aligning with national reporting standards.
These configurations give you the flexibility to align grading with your school’s assessment policies.
Read for a detailed guide on creating grade scales.

Setting up Final grade

Final grade setup defines which grade scales are used to report student performance at the end of each grading period and how the final grade is calculated. Navigate to: Admin portalSchoolGrading setupFinal grade setup
Here, you can configure:
Which grade scales are assigned to each course or subject for final grade reporting.
How the final grade is calculated, for example, whether it is derived from score-based grading, standards-based grading, or entered manually by the teacher.

Setting up GPA and credits

GPA and credits allow your school to track cumulative academic performance across subjects or courses. When configured, grade points, credit totals, and GPA are calculated automatically and appear in student gradebooks and progress reports. Navigate to:
Admin portalSchoolGrading setupGPA and credits
Here, you can:
Enable credit tracking and GPA calculation, and choose how grade points and GPA are calculated.
Assign credit values to each subject or course per grading period and choose which subjects or courses contribute to the student’s GPA.

Set up score and grade aggregation

Score and grade aggregation lets you calculate totals and averages across subjects or courses for each grading period. When configured, these values appear in the gradebook and progress reports, giving students, families, and teachers a consolidated view of student performance.
Here’s what you can do:
Enable score aggregation, grade aggregation, or both.
Select which grade scales are included in grade aggregation.
Configure the aggregation type (Average or Sum) and which subjects contribute for each grading period.
Set decimal display settings for aggregated values.
For a full walkthrough of how to configure score and grade aggregation, refer to this article.

Setting up Score-based grading

Score-based grading allows you to evaluate student performance using numeric or letter grades. This method aggregates results from individual tasks to generate a final grade for each grading period.
To configure this in Toddle, go to Admin portal > School > Grading setup > Score based grading.
Here, you can:
Create grading categories such as homework, projects, assessments, etc.
Choose how scores are calculated and displayed for individual as well as cumulative grading periods
This setup ensures grading practices remain consistent and aligned across all courses/subjects using score-based evaluation.

Setting up Standard based grading

Standards-based grading helps you assess students on specific learning goals or achievement standards, providing a clearer picture of mastery.
To set this up, go to Admin portal > School > Grading setup > Standards based grading.
Here, you can:
Map grade scales to each standard set
Choose how multiple evaluations for a single standard are combined (e.g., mean or weighted mean).
Choose how scores from sub-standards roll up to the overall parent standard (e.g., mean or maximum value).
This approach supports a more transparent and learning-focused evaluation process across your school.

Learning goals grading

Here, you can map grade scales to learning goals configured for your school and decide how ratings are managed across grading periods. Navigate to:
Admin portalSchoolGrading setupLearning goals grading
Here, you can:
Map one or more regular grade scales to learning goals.
Choose whether ratings carry forward to the next grading period or are independent for each grading period.
For a full walkthrough of how to configure learning goals and manage student evaluations, refer to .

Visibility settings

Visibility settings control what students and family members can see across all gradebooks, including final grades, assessment scores, standards evaluations, learning goals ratings, and GPA and credits data. Navigate to:
Admin portalSchoolGrading setupVisibility settings
