Approaches to learning

Approaches to learning(ATL) describe the skills students develop to manage their learning and become self-regulated learners.

What can I do on this page?

Use this page to configure the ATL skill categories, skills and sub-skills that teachers can select while planning units.
Add a new ATL skill category using the Add skill category button.
You can define the category title and associate it with relevant grades.

Define its structure (Skills only or Skills + sub-skills).
Delete the category.
To manage skills and sub-skills within a category, open the category and switch to Modify mode.

Click Add sub-skills to add a new sub-skill title and description.
Assign grades using the Grades column.

Things to keep in mind

IB-defined ATLs are listed by default, but you can edit them or add new ones as per your school’s context.
ATLs configured here can be selected while planning units and tagged as learning goals in learning experiences and portfolio posts.
Each ATL skill category can have a maximum of two hierarchy levels.
ATLs can be edited or deleted even if they are already in use in unit plans, learning experiences, or portfolio posts.
When you edit an ATL category, skill or sub-skill, the changes are reflected everywhere it has been tagged.
If you delete an ATL category, skill, or sub-skill, it will remain visible wherever it was previously tagged but cannot be selected for future use.
Deleting an ATL skill category removes all associated skills and sub-skills.
