Routine 0: Purposeful and Aligned Planning Routine


Instructional focus: Gain a clear understanding of the lesson’s central purpose so that instructional decisions remain intentionally aligned to that purpose throughout the lesson.
Use this routine when…
You are preparing to teach and want a clear understanding of the lesson’s central purpose.
You need to confirm that activities, tasks, and questions align to that purpose.
You want to protect instructional time, clarify rigor, or anticipate needed supports.
You are planning differentiation or small groups and want decisions anchored to the lesson goal

Planning Note: A clearly defined lesson purpose creates instructional coherence, helping you maintain rigor while making intentional decisions about pacing, scaffolds, and support.

Lesson Internalization

Step 1: Generate a Lesson Plan Using HMH Tools

Access HMH AI tools through the Teacher Dashboard.
Select Create a Lesson Plan
Enter required information, including:
Class details
Curriculum location
Aligned standards
Complete additional information as applicable:
Student learning needs (no names or identifying information)
Group work norms or classroom systems
Instructional priorities
Community or cultural connections
Generate the lesson plan. This step provides the instructional context that will anchor all planning and decision-making that follows.

Step 2: Clarify the Lesson Purpose Using HMH Assist

Use HMH Assist as a thinking partner to deepen your understanding of the lesson’s purpose and ensure alignment across instructional activities.
Use this step to identify:
Where instructional time should be protected
Where scaffolds or instructional routines may be needed
Where rigor may need to be strengthened or clarified

Outcome of the Purposeful Planning Routine

At the conclusion of this routine, the you should be able to clearly articulate:
The lesson’s central purpose
What aligned student work looks like
Which instructional routines will best support students in meeting the lesson purpose
How rigor, scaffolding, and differentiation will be used in service of that purpose
