in front of them. The scene is supposed to represent their favorite family celebration, but important elements are missing! Kids can fill in the page by drawing:
a food from that celebration, on the table.
a person or family member they celebrate with, at the seats.
a decoration or item related to the celebration, on the table or on the walls.
Step 2: Sharing and Discussion (10 minutes)
Once the timer has gone off, kids return their pencils, and sit around a circle.
Davorka: Have each child introduce themselves by stating their name and then by describing one piece of their drawing to the class:
What celebration have they depicted?
What traditions or rituals does their family enjoy during this celebration?
Who are the people gathered at the celebration?
What specific foods do you eat during this celebration?
Ask the kids to turn in their drawings so they can color them later on.
Finding the Practice in the Bible (20 minutes)
Step 3:Christy: Remind the children that we are spending the month sharing stories about Jesus eating with others, and how this practice of sharing meals inspired churches around the world to celebrate communion/eucharist. Last week, we heard about the time Jesus fed 5,000 people with 5 loaves and fish. This week, we are going to hear about a time when Jesus celebrated a special feast with his friends, called the Passover.
For Younger Kids: When they hear the word “meal”, they should turn to their friends, pat their tummies, and say: “Mmmm yummy!”
During the first half of the story, use the Blue Marker. Draw lines to connect parts where people in the story are getting ready for the meal.
During the second half of the story, use the Red Marker. Draw lines to connect parts once people sit down to share the meal.
Step 4:Donna reads the story first. Make sure to emphasize the take + thank + break + share pattern, even though it’s not not highlighted in the story. After reading, Donna asks:
For Younger Kids: What special feast were Jesus and his friends celebrating?
For Older Kids: What connection did Jesus ask his friends to make in Jerusalem order to find the party spot?
For Everyone: There were four things Jesus did when he ate the meal with his friends. What’s the first one he does with the bread? The second? etc.
Step 5:Christy tells the kids they'll hear the story again, with a bit of a twist.
For Younger Kids: When the story mention the word Passover, stand up, find a partner, and act out the gestures take, thank, break, and share. Keep rotating partners.
For Older Kids: Use a Yellow Marker this time. Highlight parts of the story where someone in the story is helping someone else as an act of service.
Step 6:Davorka reads the story the second time. After reading, Davorka asks:
For everyone: What did Jesus tell the disciples to do when they ate the bread? (Remember)
For Older Kids: What's one important act of service shared between people in this story?
For everyone: How did everyone FEEL at the end of the story when they were together? (Happy)
