Final Reflection

The Innovation & Entrepreneurship Certificate has been one of the most transformative aspects of my Duke experience, it has shaped my academic journey while enhancing personal and professional growth. Through the courses, experiential learning, and real-world applications, I’ve gained a deeper understanding of myself and the impact I want to create as an entrepreneur.

Biggest Takeaways from the Capstone
The capstone was a culmination of my entrepreneurial education at Duke, and it pushed me to think critically about the realities of building and scaling ventures. One of my biggest takeaways was the importance of decision-making under uncertainty. Analyzing real-world MBA-style cases and the ventures I worked on, highlighted the tough choices founders must make at every stage—from deciding on co-founders to navigating product-market fit.
Another takeaway was understanding the ripple effect of early decisions. Choices made in the foundational stages of a company—such as equity splits, fundraising strategies, and team dynamics—can cascade into future challenges or successes. These insights not only informed how I view startups but also shaped my approach to future ventures.
Lastly, the capstone reinforced the value of collaboration and resilience. Working with peers on complex problems showed me the power of diverse perspectives and the importance of iteration in finding solutions. The ethical dilemmas we debated further reminded me of the responsibilities entrepreneurs hold, not just to their ventures but to society at large.

Evolving Understanding of Innovation & Entrepreneurship
When I began this program, I thought entrepreneurship was solely about innovation—creating new products or services that solve a problem. While this remains true, my understanding has evolved to encompass the strategic, human, and systemic dimensions of entrepreneurship.
Through my experiences with Blue See Glasses and Dandy, I learned that entrepreneurship isn’t just about having a good idea; it’s about execution, adaptability, and understanding your market deeply. For example, Dandy taught me the challenge of changing consumer habits and the importance of sustainable, organic growth. Blue See Glasses highlighted the significance of timing and market dynamics, showing me how a product’s lifecycle can define a venture’s success or failure.
Additionally, the program helped me understand my strengths as an entrepreneur. I thrive in hands-on roles—whether it’s coding, designing user flows, or negotiating deals—but I’ve also grown as a leader, capable of managing teams, fostering collaboration, and making tough decisions. I now see entrepreneurship as a balance of creativity and pragmatism, vision and execution.

Impact on My Duke Experience
The I&E program added a unique dimension to my Duke education by bridging my technical background in computer science with my passion for business and innovation. It allowed me to:
Apply Learning to Real-World Ventures: Courses like Product Management and Everything is Data directly influenced how I approached challenges in Blue See Glasses and Dandy. The knowledge I gained wasn’t confined to the classroom; it became the foundation for my entrepreneurial experiments.
Develop a Growth Mindset: The program emphasized that failure is a natural part of the entrepreneurial process. This mindset has been instrumental in helping me navigate setbacks and turn them into learning opportunities.
Strengthen My Purpose: Growing up in Colombia, I’ve always wanted to use my education to create positive change. The I&E program deepened this resolve, showing me how innovation can drive social impact. My ventures, reaffirmed that business and service can go hand-in-hand.

Applying What I’ve Learned Beyond Duke
I plan to apply these lessons in several ways:
Building for Impact: My ultimate goal is to launch a company that addresses pressing issues in Colombia, Latin America, and The World. The entrepreneurial skills and frameworks I’ve developed at Duke will guide me in identifying opportunities and scaling solutions.
Focusing on Execution: The I&E program has taught me that ideas are only as good as their execution. Whether I’m working on strategy for a client or developing a product, I’ll prioritize clear goals, iterative processes, and efficient systems.
Embracing Lifelong Learning: The program has instilled in me a commitment to continuous learning, whether it’s through engaging with new technologies, analyzing market trends, or seeking mentorship.

The I&E Certificate has been a cornerstone of my Duke experience, equipping me with the knowledge, skills, and mindset to navigate the complexities of entrepreneurship. It has enhanced my understanding of innovation and my sense of purpose.
