Lab 09 - Believer Avionics

In Lab 09, our group (Evan Madura, Kyle Struck, and Alex Delatorre) configured the autopilot system for the MFE Believer using the Blue Cube and Ground Control Station. The main objective was to configure flight modes and integrate onboard sensors, including the digital airspeed sensor and the GPD. We began by connecting the Cube to the GCS.

We looked at the parameter settings to ensure it was set up correctly. The RFD900 telemetry radio was connected using a 6-pin JST-GH connector, and TELEM1 was set to a baud rate of 57600 for communication. We also configured the GPS. We also learned how to set up the digital airspeed sensor.

We were not able to make a direct USB connection to our Cube during the parameter process. So, we used the RFD900 telemetry link to write the parameters. We also used another group’s Cube to reference correct CAN and GPS settings before applying them to our own software. Once we flashed the parameters, we rebooted the autopilot to make sure they all saved.

Overall, I struggled with this lab heavily because I do not understand the majority of what we are doing. It is difficult for me to follow along with the lab, and this is the root of all of my problems.

Lab 10 - Motors and Controls

In this lab, we worked with the GPS servos and the DATX transmitted system. The goal was to pair the transmitter and receiver, upload the correct firmware and parameter files, and verify system status.

First, to connect the aircraft to an external transmitter, we used the TBS Tracer Micro Starter Set. We identified all the items in the kit, and then we soldered the required parts together. After setting this up, we paired the TX and RX by loading a LUA script onto the DATX. We used Lua version 52, because our FCU uses firmware under version 2.1.

The next part of this lab was to upload the firmware and parameters. We used BlueCube FCU Version 1.31, consistent with Lab 09.

Importing the parameter file and then re-exporting it

After uploading the new parameters, we verified the functionality. We connected the GPS, airspeed, telemetry, and DATX. The only thing that was not working was the airspeed. Our group and the T.A. did not know why, but there are a lot of places you can go wrong in this lab, and it also looked like every group was struggling, unfortunately.

The last thing we did was take pictures of the MFE Believer that had already been assembled to help us when we construct our own.
