Grey Water Harvesting Tool

10 years of Blue Revolution

For thousands of citizens of mumbai, a clean-predictable supply of water is a distant dream. It is sold at a highly subsidised rate of Rs.5 per 1000 liters, a microscopic price to pay for a well-off citizen living in our gated high-rises. On the flip side, citizens in slums or gaothans often pay upto 20-50 times more and end up surviving on around 20 litres a day. Notwithstanding the time and effort invested in arranging the logistics of carrying and storing the water manually.

Upto 2,000,000 people living in Mumbai do not have legal access to water

On the other hand, how much rainwater can we collect?

1770
(Mumbai averages 2400mm)
Expected rain water harvested per year :
0

Nowhere close right? We are growing vertically. Rainwater harvesting depends on the horizontal spread of our buildings, thus to sustain growing populations, water harvesting must be localised on a building level.

How much does this cost in the short-term? and what are the economic benefits in the long-term?

To implement a grey-water harvesting system, planning and designing the plumbing system of a building requires one further step than business-as-usual.
Lets take a look at the different components, how they compare to usual and how much they cost
Component
Cost/Effort
What is the norm?
Column 4
1
For each apartment, separate down-take pipes from each bathroom (floor drainage), kitchen (sink), and washing machine (if any) from the WC’s or toilets (human waste)
Increased Plumbing and Piping costs
All drains converge into one outflow source.

2
Build an independent Grey water harvesting capture tank (underground)
Extra tank, more space
