Copper Ounces Explained: AVDP vs Troy Ounces

Many collectors are surprised to learn that not all bullion products use the same weight system.
Gold and silver are traditionally measured in Troy Ounces.
Copper bullion, however, is often measured using Avoirdupois Ounces (AVDP).
This creates confusion because:
1 Troy Ounce = 31.103 grams
1 AVDP Ounce = 28.349 grams
That means a copper round labeled as "1 AVDP Ounce" contains less metal than a traditional Troy Ounce.
Why does this matter?
Copper bullion originated from industrial copper markets where AVDP measurements were commonly used. As copper collecting grew, many private mints continued using AVDP standards.
When comparing copper products, always verify whether the weight listed is:
• 1 Troy Ounce • 1 AVDP Ounce • 5 Troy Ounces • 1 Pound Copper
Understanding the difference helps collectors compare products accurately and avoid confusion when calculating weight and value.
Knowledge is one of the best investments a collector can make.
