Understanding the Characters

Let's think about the people we've met in this part of the story:
Heidi:
A five-year-old girl who seems to be adaptable and enjoys the freedom of movement. She is also quiet and direct in her responses.
Dete:
Heidi's aunt. She appears to be practical but perhaps not very kind or patient. She seems more concerned about her own responsibilities and future earnings.
The Goatherd (Peter):
A young boy who is used to the mountain life and is easily persuaded by money.
Heidi's Grandfather (Uncle):
He is described as gruff and looks at Heidi sternly. His reaction to Dete suggests he might be a strong-willed and perhaps angry man.
