Answer to text book exercise

Comprehension Answers

A. Write true or false.

Heidi and her aunt lived in the mountains.
False (Heidi's aunt was taking her up the mountain to her grandfather.)
Heidi's grandfather lived in the mountains.
True (His hut was at the top of the Alm mountain.)
Heidi's aunt was a kind-hearted woman.
False (She seemed more concerned with her own convenience and earnings.)
Heidi was tired walking uphill.
False (She said she was hot, not tired.)
Heidi did not like the walk uphill.
We don't know for sure if she liked it, but she did struggle with the heat and her clothes. So, we could say True in the sense that she found it difficult.

B. Answer the questions.

How was the child dressed? Why was she dressed in this manner?
The child, Heidi, was dressed in two dresses, one on top of the other, a red woolen shawl, and thick mountain shoes. She was dressed in this manner because her aunt, Dete, wanted to avoid the trouble of carrying her clothes up the mountain.
What made her take off all her clothes except her undergarment?
The heat of the sunny day and the weight of all her layers of clothing exhausted her and made it difficult to climb. Seeing the lightly dressed goatherd made her realize she needed to remove her clothes to move more easily.
How did her aunt react when she saw the child in her undergarment?
Her aunt, Dete, shrieked out in anger and was very upset. She questioned Heidi about where all her clothes, including new items, had gone.
Why did Peter, the goatherd, go down to fetch the clothes?
Peter initially didn't want to go, saying he was late. However, he agreed to go down to fetch the clothes when Dete offered him a bright new coin as a reward.
Why had Dete brought Heidi to the Alm mountain?
Dete had brought Heidi to the Alm mountain to leave her with her grandfather. Dete felt she had done her duty by caring for Heidi for four years and now it was time for Heidi's grandfather to take responsibility.

C. Read the lines and answer the questions.

Able now to move at her ease, she leapt and skipped almost as nimbly as the goats.
a. Who is she here?
She here is Heidi.
b. Why wasn't she able to move easily before? Why could she do so now?
She wasn't able to move easily before because she was wearing many layers of heavy clothing, which made her hot and restricted her movement. She could move easily now because she had taken off all those extra clothes.
c. What does the above sentence tell us about the child?
This sentence tells us that Heidi is naturally active and agile when she is comfortable and not weighed down by clothing. It also shows her joy and freedom in being able to move like the animals she is observing.
"I have done my duty by her for these four years, and now it is time for you to do yours."
a. Who said this and to whom? How had she done her duty?
Dete said this to Heidi's grandfather. She had done her duty by taking care of Heidi for the past four years after the child was left in her care.
b. What did the speaker expect the other person to do?
The speaker, Dete, expected Heidi's grandfather to take on the responsibility of caring for Heidi from that point forward.
c. How did the listener react to this statement?
The listener, Heidi's grandfather, reacted with a curt question ("What has she to do with me?") and later expressed concern about Heidi missing Dete, indicating his reluctance and perhaps uncertainty about taking on this role.

D. Think and answer.

What is your opinion about Dete? Give instances from the story to support your answer.
My opinion about Dete is that she is a selfish and somewhat unkind person. For instance, she made Heidi wear all her clothes just to avoid carrying them herself, showing a lack of concern for the child's comfort. Also, her quick and unsympathetic departure, telling the grandfather it was his "affair" if Heidi missed her, demonstrates a lack of emotional care for Heidi.
What do you think about Heidi? Give reasons for your answer.
I think Heidi is a resourceful and brave little girl. She didn't complain about the heat but took action to make herself comfortable by removing her clothes. Also, when faced with her gruff grandfather, she "stared steadily back," showing she is not easily intimidated. Her desire to follow the goatherd and the goats also suggests she is curious and active.
Why do you think Heidi's grandfather became angry at Dete's words?
I think Heidi's grandfather became angry at Dete's words because she was essentially dumping a responsibility on him without any consideration for his feelings or whether he even wanted to care for a child. Her dismissive attitude and the implication that he had to take Heidi in likely made him feelResentful and used.
